Manala Tyobeka

Hi, I’m Manala and I’m a statistician.

I recently completed an MSc in Advanced Analytics (now called Statistics and Data Science) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Prior to that, I completed a BSc in Mathematics and Applied Statistics, as well as a BSc (Honours) in Statistical Sciences (now called Statistics and Data Science), also at UCT.

My MSc research explored various data-driven text representation strategies for low-resource South African languages with the goal of optimising Transformer-based models for the translation of text from English to these low-resource languages.

However, my curiosity does not stop there: if there is data that needs to be cleaned, modelled or simply understood, then I’m all in. I love finding patterns in chaos, and translating burning questions into meaningful insights.
